What Type of Hoop Should I Get? A Beginner’s Guide

Hi,  Coach Erica here again, and if you’re just starting your praise and worship hoop dance journey, you might be wondering: What type of hoop should I get? The right hoop makes all the difference when learning, so let’s break it down and find the best one for you!

Beginner Hoops & Fitness Hoops: One and the Same

If you’re looking for a hoop for beginner on-body hooping or fitness, you’re in luck—beginner hoops and fitness hoops are essentially the same thing! These hoops are designed to be larger, heavier, and easier to control, which makes them perfect for learning waist hooping, core strengthening, and foundational movements.

✔️ Made from PE (polyethylene) tubing – This material gives the hoop a little weight, making it easier to keep up on your waist.
✔️ Diameter: 40” – 48” – Most adults start with a hoop in this range. The taller or curvier you are, the closer to 48” you’ll want to go!
✔️ Great for core engagement – Perfect for getting movement in while incorporating worship and praise.

If you’re just getting started with on-body hooping, a 40-48” PE tubing hoop is your best choice!

Off-Body Dance Hoops: Finding the Right Size

If you’re more interested in off-body dance movements—like spinning, isolations, and tosses—you’ll want a different kind of hoop.

Off-body dance hoops can be made of different tubing types, including polypro and HDPE, which are lighter and more responsive than PE tubing.
Diameter: 32” – 36” – Larger hoops are easier to learn with, while smaller hoops spin faster and are more reactive.

If you’re new to off-body hoop dance, I recommend starting on the larger side (36") and downsizing later if you want a hoop that moves faster!

The Smaller the Hoop, the Faster It Moves

One thing to remember: the smaller the hoop, the faster it will rotate!

Larger hoops (40”+) are slower and more controlled, which makes them easier for beginners.
Smaller hoops (under 32”) move faster and are more reactive, which can be fun but also more challenging.

As a beginner, starting with a larger hoop will help you build confidence and technique before switching to a smaller, faster hoop later on.
